Man's inhumanity to both Man and Animal knows no bounds. I had no idea what "battery" hens meant until I lived in a village in 1972 and went into a barn to collect a tray of eggs. I still remember being stunned - by the noise, the smell, and most particularly by the close confinement of the hens in multi-storey wire cages. That it still goes on is anathema.
