I recall watching in wonder from the third floor of a building in my nearest city, intricate patterns akin to shoals of fish, weaving and rising and dipping in the gloaming, and then, as you described, arrowing down to disappear from view. Where to in a city, I have no idea! It's usually reedbeds. Maybe the river.
