Chiller Fiction for Halloween

A Glimmer In The Night

From the collection: ‘Contribution to Mankind and other Stories of the Dark’.

Linda Acaster

Despite our well-lit modern lives, the dark remains our greatest fear. The thing that might, that does, exist within it. The collection of short fiction which makes up Contribution To Mankind and Other Stories of the Dark explores some of the terrors that we might find lurking. Or worse, might find us. Sit back and immerse yourself in this historical chiller, A Glimmer In The Night.

With the securing of two local ponies, we were ready to leave the greening landscape of early summer to journey through the divide. In one breath Achen assured me that the crossing would take a day and a night, while in another he insisted I purchase a greased, fur-lined riding coat that fell below my knees and was so heavy that it threatened to fell me.

‘Gut prizz! Gut vager! Gut….’ The last guttural syllables were lost to his excitement.

He enjoyed the distasteful haggling these people insisted upon, and attempted to have me purchase such a coat for him. We haggled; he expected it. This time I was adamant. I had already paid enough for Achen to be my guide.
